Minnesota

Kelsey and I are spending four nights in Minnesota before departing for Munich. We spent two nights in Duelm, a town of 2,000, with the Goreckis, a kind, hospitable, humble family, the parents of one of my best friends. And their backyard is beautiful, as Kelsey took the time to document.

Perhaps the most unique site on the 15-hour drive from Louisville to Duelm was the Fowler Ridge Wind Farm in Benton County, Indiana. Neither Kelsey nor I had ever seen a wind farm, and this one stretched for miles and miles. Some wind turbines were dormant while others spun with a murderous velocity.

We are now in Mankato, a college town on the edge of prairie country (i.e. Iowa) in south-central Minnesota, staying with Mark Gorecki, someone I met while studying at UMass. Mark and his mother Evie at Munsinger Gardens in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, July 5th:The Munsinger Gardens were very impressive. The huge network of distinctive flowers wades in the wind rolling westward from the Mississippi River. Saint Cloud State University occupies the river's opposite shore.

Tomorrow, it's Germany (via Iceland)
